Two hundred and forty-seven years ago this month, we the people of the United States of America had had enough and decided to form a more perfect union!
But what gave this small group of now-former colonists any hope whatsoever that this fledgling nation would even survive, let alone thrive?! It is the same source from which we can have hope for our nation today! And, it is the very same source from which we can have hope for our own lives and families right now in these last days!
The promises of God – Covenant promises!
Let’s look at some things that our very first President, George Washington, said during his “first official act” representing the United States of America as a nation . . .
“Such being the impressions under which I have, in obedience to the public summons, repaired to the present station; it would be peculiarly improper to omit in this first official Act, my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the Universe, who presides in the Councils of Nations, and whose providential aids can supply every human defect, that his benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the People of the United States, a Government instituted by themselves for these essential purposes: and may enable every instrument employed in its administration to execute with success, the functions allotted to his charge. In tendering this homage to the Great Author of every public and private good I assure myself that it expresses your sentiments not less than my own; nor those of my fellow-citizens at large, less than either. No People can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand, which conducts the Affairs of men more than the People of the United States. Every step, by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation, seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency.” – George Washington Inaugural address
President Washington acknowledged that every step in our becoming a nation had taken place by God’s hand and entered into prayer covenant for the blessing on this nation!
It is a done deal! An official act between a nation and it’s God!
Looking around at the situation at that time, it looked impossible. Looking around at the situation in this time, many believe it is impossible. Looking around at the situation in your life right now, you may think it is impossible!
But God! But His Word! But His Covenant!
Let’s look at the Scriptural principle that our founders put to work that we need to be utilizing today as well!
“Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;”
Romans 4:16-20 KJV
Notice the phrase “against hope believed in hope.” One translation says, “under utterly hopeless circumstances he hopefully believed.”
If the circumstances were or are utterly hopeless, where did the hope come from?
The Promises of God! The Covenant!
That is where this fledgling nation anchored it’s hope. It is where we anchor our hope as a nation now. It is where you and I anchor our hope for our lives and families now!
After Abraham did that, the Scripture says it resulted in him not being weak in faith and having the ability to not consider his body nor Sarah’s body that had always been barren! And it will enable us to not consider what the news media is telling us about this nation nor how the economy or the latest disease is going to affect us!
Stir up your hope! Jack it up just as high as you can get it on the Word of God!
In praying for this nation, stand strong on that first official act! Remind God of that act in covenant remembrance!
In your own personal life and family, go to the Word and find the specific promises that apply to your situation and remind Him that those promises are backed by the sinless blood of Jesus. Anchor your hope in those promises in faith and watch the impossible happen right before your eyes!
