I want to show you today the seriousness of John 15:7. Jesus said, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you.” That’s the King James translation of those Greek words.
Let me state it the way it is stated in the original Greek language. Hold on to something so you don’t fall over now!
“If you live and have your being in Me and my Word lives and abides in you, you will require and demand as something due to you whatever you will and it will be done for you!”
WOW!!
As a comparison to help you see how very seriously the Lord takes this and impress upon you the absolute certainty of this reality, let us look at Mark 6:17-29. This is the story of how and why John the Baptist’s head was cut off. Read the whole story but for the sake of brevity I will just provide a short summary here.
The king had tremendous respect for and even some fear of John the Baptist and listened to him often and did many of the things John instructed him to do. However, due to the lust of other things entering in, Herod got in a jam and pretty much had to imprison John as a show of support for his wife. His wife’s daughter entertained the king and his guests at a party and so he tells her he will give her anything she asks up to half his kingdom. She goes to her mother and says, “What shall I ‘ask’?”
Her mother gave her instructions and in verses 25 and 26 we read “And she came straightway with haste unto the king, and asked saying, ‘I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.”
Two things I want you to see out of this..
- That word “asked” is exactly the same word as in John 15:7! She demanded something that was due her! Why was it due to her? Because the king had promised it!
- It was such a serious thing that the king, even though he did not want to do it and it caused him great sorrow, went so far as to take a man’s life because she made a demand on something that was due her based upon his promise and his word.
When you make a demand on what is due to you based upon what He has promised in His Word, you can rest assured that it’s as good as done!
